WHAT HAPPENED
The Space Force awarded SpaceX a $1.6 billion contract on July 29 for 18 Falcon 9 launches through 2027 under the National Security Space Launch Phase 3 program. The missions will deploy satellites from the Space-Based Sensing and Targeting portfolio, an orbital early-warning system designed to spot airborne threats and relay targeting data to military forces in near-real-time. SpaceX holds both the launch contract and is the primary spacecraft vendor, making the company the sole supplier across the entire orbital stack for this mission class.
On July 28, the Federal Communications Commission updated its Covered List to ban new imports of foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots, as well as connected power inverters from overseas manufacturers. The robot ban applies to mobile devices over 4.4 pounds that include sensing, networking, and control software; China holds approximately 85 percent of the current humanoid-robot market. The FCC cited national security determinations by an executive branch interagency body concluding foreign inverters posed unacceptable risks to electric grid security as electricity demand grows and the grid becomes more reliant on inverter-based resources. The restrictions apply to new device models only and do not affect previously authorized products already in market.
NASA completed wind tunnel tests on SpaceX's Super Heavy Version 3 booster at Ames Research Center on July 31, running aerodynamic analyses across Mach 0.7 to Mach 1.4 on a 1.2 percent scale model to better understand forces during re-entry for the Artemis III demonstration mission. The same day, NASA opened the Flight Dynamics Research Facility at Langley Research Center, the agency's first major new wind tunnel in more than 40 years, signaling a major expansion in domestic aerospace testing capacity.
K2 Space in Torrance, California, received a $22.9 million firm-fixed-price contract on July 31 to procure, integrate, launch, and operate two space terminals on K2 buses as hosted payloads for the Department of Defense Enterprise Space Terminals program, with delivery due November 2028.
