HEADLINE

Fusion demo reactor approaches completion while U.S. Space Force locks in commercial spacecraft for domain awareness and ground infrastructure.

THE BIG PICTURE

This week marks a visible shift from venture-backed speculation to institutional capital and government contracts backing hardware progress. Pension funds and sovereign wealth are now backing fusion assembly milestones; the Pentagon is contracting with commercial space startups for operational satellite networks; and nuclear spinouts are moving from theory to manufacturing timelines. The connecting thread is not sector but maturity: capital is flowing toward systems that are demonstrably built or under active construction, not toward research papers or prototypes.

WHAT HAPPENED

Commonwealth Fusion Systems announced on July 30 a $1 billion equity close, bringing its total raised to $4 billion. The capital came from pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, infrastructure investors, and industrial corporate partners. SPARC, the demonstration reactor at Devens, Massachusetts, is approximately 80% assembled, with first plasma targeted for 2027. The company hired Lorence Kim, former CFO of Moderna, who previously raised $4.4 billion for mRNA manufacturing. Google and Eni have signed power purchase agreements covering more than half of CFS's planned ARC commercial power plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia. CFS also filed an interconnection application with PJM, the largest U.S. wholesale electricity market, becoming the first fusion company to do so. CEO Bob Mumgaard stated: 'What we used to think was impossible now is feeling more and more inevitable.'

Nuclear Turbines, a UK-based spinout from BAE Systems, emerged from stealth on July 27 with a £15 million foundational round led by IQ Capital, joined by Rhapsody Venture Partners, Zero Carbon Capital, and Empirical Ventures. The company is developing compact, cost-effective advanced nuclear reactors using jet-engine turbine architectures to reduce manufacturing complexity and accelerate deployment timelines. The funding will advance reactor design validation, build large-scale test rigs, and support manufacturing of first fuel elements.

The U.S. Space Force awarded Impulse Space a $27.77 million contract modification on July 28 under its SBIR Phase III program to build and deliver two additional Mira space domain awareness vehicles. Mira is a commercial spacecraft designed to track objects and activities in low Earth orbit, providing real-time intelligence to DoD and allied forces. The contract expansion signals sustained demand for commercial LEO surveillance capabilities.

All Points Logistics received a $250 million DoD contract on July 28 for space vehicle processing, checkout, and launch support services at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The multi-year contract covers handling and preparation of military and national security space payloads, underpinning the logistics infrastructure behind the Pentagon's accelerating space launch cadence.

Fedimint, an open-source protocol for federated ecash and Lightning Network integration, released v0.12.0-beta.3 on July 30, following beta.2 on July 28. Two consecutive pre-release candidates in 48 hours indicate the project is converging toward a stable 0.12.0 release, which will enable non-custodial, privacy-preserving payments over distributed federated systems without reliance on a single point of failure.

WATCHING

Watch for CFS's first plasma announcement at SPARC, expected in 2027, which will validate the feasibility of the company's high-temperature superconducting magnet architecture at demonstration scale. In space, track the Air Force Space Command's next round of domain awareness contract awards and whether Impulse Space's expanded Mira constellation translates into operational LEO surveillance coverage before year-end. Fedimint's v0.12.0 stable release may drive adoption among privacy-focused payment networks in the coming weeks.
