The technology stores power for 100 hours at a cost per unit of energy capacity roughly 10 times lower than lithium-ion batteries, and does so without critical raw minerals like lithium or cobalt. CEO Aytac Yilmaz stated the primary objective is to challenge the monopoly held by natural gas in bridging multi-day gaps in renewable energy supply. The company has already secured a 1GWh deal with Budget Thuis, a Dutch utility, with a committed first phase of 400MWh due by 2028, and pilot projects with French utility EDF have demonstrated real-world performance.
The iron-air chemistry is deliberately mundane: Ore Energy exposes iron electrodes to oxygen to trigger a rusting process, then reverses the reaction using electricity. This approach targets a structural gap in grid storage. Wind and solar produce power unpredictably over multi-day stretches; currently only natural gas fills those gaps economically. A rust-based battery holding power for four days at $20/kWh could make gas peakers structurally unnecessary for backup.
NASA and SpaceX are tracking a Falcon 9 upper stage from a commercial mission expected to impact the Moon today near the Einstein and Bell craters. The agency is deploying ground-based telescopes and space-based assets to observe the impact in real time. Uncontrolled hardware strikes on the Moon are rare enough to generate direct observational data about lunar regolith composition and impact dynamics that robotic landers cannot easily replicate.
