Two major developments are signaling where capital and infrastructure are flowing in deep tech: toward AI that solves hard physical-world problems, and toward government-backed platforms that democratize expensive sensing. CuspAI's $2.6 billion valuation and 45-partner coalition, including Nvidia, Meta, Samsung, and Hyundai, reflects a structural bet that AI simulation can compress years of laboratory work into weeks. Simultaneously, NISAR's data release removes the paywall on planetary-scale radar monitoring, letting researchers worldwide track landslides, floods, ice loss, and earthquakes in real time. Both move are bets on scale: one through private capital velocity, the other through public access.

WHAT HAPPENED

CuspAI, a Cambridge-based AI materials discovery startup, raised $450 million in Series B funding and announced the launch of its AI Materials Foundry, a coalition of over 45 technology and industrial partners. The round valued the company at $2.6 billion, up from $520 million in its last round. Kleiner Perkins and NEA led the investment, with participation from Bezos Expeditions, Lux Capital, AMD Ventures, and Britain's Sovereign AI Venture Fund. The Materials Foundry pools compute resources, laboratory access, and scientific expertise to accelerate discovery of new materials, particularly semiconductors, where CuspAI said 80 percent of its 2026 effort is concentrated. NEA highlighted applications ranging from removing forever chemicals from drinking water to designing next-generation chip materials. CuspAI now operates labs in Cambridge, Singapore, and the San Francisco Bay Area, and total funding exceeds $650 million.

The same day, NASA and ISRO released provisional data from the NISAR satellite's L-band and S-band radar instruments to the public. NISAR, launched on July 30, 2025, is the first free-flying mission to carry two complementary radar systems: the longer-wave L-band penetrates tree canopies to image the ground beneath, while the S-band observes forest canopies themselves. The initial release includes over 100,000 data files from observations collected after June 17, 2026, with new acquisitions added as they are processed. The data is marked provisional, calibrated and partially validated, but still subject to processing improvements, and is available globally at no cost. Researchers can now track land and ice mass movement, monitor ecosystem changes in forests and wetlands, and detect natural hazards including landslides, earthquakes, and subsidence.

WATCHING

Watch for CuspAI's first materials breakthroughs delivered through the Foundry, semiconductor partners like Lam Research and Samsung will be early test cases. Also track the quality and processing speed of NISAR's data releases as more scenes are processed; rapid turnaround on new acquisitions is the measure of whether this platform becomes operationally useful for disaster response and climate monitoring.
