WHAT HAPPENED
On July 22, the White House announced more than $5 billion in federal commitments to expand the Genesis Mission, its whole-of-government AI-for-science initiative. The Department of Energy selected 278 projects from more than 5,000 proposals, involving 342 institutions and covering pediatric cancer, drug discovery, critical minerals, advanced nuclear energy, chip manufacturing, grid resilience, autonomous laboratories, and quantum systems. The same day, Cincinnati-based startup 1872 announced the opening of what it describes as one of the first autonomous steel fabrication factories in the United States, while closing a $15 million seed funding round. The company was founded by three former SpaceX engineers and is led by CEO Dan Summers. Its proprietary Factory OS integrates AI software with advanced robotics from Path Robotics to automate heavy fabrication tasks, managing the entire manufacturing process from material sourcing to controlling robotics and moving steel components. The company claims it can cut customer lead times from months or years to weeks for some fabricated metal products. U.S. demand for fabricated metal products reaches roughly $350 billion annually, yet the industry faces a structural labor shortage, with the American Welding Society projecting a deficit of 320,000 welders by 2030. 1872 expects to achieve full autonomy in 2027.
On July 23, the Fedimint open-source project tagged `v0.12.0-beta.0` on GitHub, marking a release candidate for the next major version of its federated Chaumian ecash protocol. Fedimint is a modular implementation designed to enable community-controlled Bitcoin custody and privacy-enhanced payments through blind signatures, allowing groups to collectively manage Bitcoin across multiple guardians with no single point of failure while making individual transactions cryptographically private. The beta.0 designation signals that final testing is underway and a production release is imminent. Bitcoin network conditions are favorable for protocol upgrades: hashrate sits at 917.3 EH/s with fees at 1 sat/vB across all confirmation tiers, the lowest-friction environment possible for on-chain settlements.
